Kenya
Roughly twice the size of Nevada, 35 million people call Kenya home, with half of those under the age of 18. With unemployment rates reaching near 40 percent in slum areas, and 23 percent of all Kenyans living on less than one dollar per day, this creates an issue of families not having enough money to send their children to school or provide them with basic necessities. Education and microfinance are the tools needed to impact the next generation.
Despite these setbacks however, Kenya remains as one of the most beautiful countries in the world, home to lush game parks, breathtaking animal migrations, towering mountains over 17,000 feet high, the Rift Valley, and coastal regions along the Indian Ocean.
Kenyan hospitality is unparalleled. It is characteristic to find individuals who do not have much offering disproportionately more than would otherwise occur in developed countries. After meeting so many gracious and hard-working people and witnessing the incredible efforts of many established organizations, Friends of Kibera is proud to partner with Kenyan residents for positive change.
