Fast Facts
The first class of graduates hail from seven different villages within Kibera. Women typically live in houses of stick and mud construction measuring less than 10 feet by 20 feet. Each woman pays on average just over $25 per month in rent for her home. Three-quarters of women from the academy are married and have five children on average. With previous earnings of just over a dollar a day before having a business, little remained to purchase food or send their children to school.
Empowered with business skills from the academy, women have bettered their lives and the lives of their families. Since joining JKBAW three women from the first class and their families have moved out of Kibera slum. All women are also able to send at least one child to school, with many women able to send all children of age to school. The net benefit created through the JKBAW program has made Friends of Kibera a proud supporter of their work.
